Federal law mandates all drivers of commercial vehicles (buses, city/state construction vehicles, etc.) receive a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination to ensure they are healthy enough to manage such a vehicle. Our Chiropractor in Austin at North Lamar Chiropractic Center gives DOT/CDL exams that comply with federal guidelines. Call our center to schedule an appointment if you need a DOT physical.
Who needs a DOT physical and card?
If you plan on driving a vehicle designed to hold over 15 people or are paid to drive a vehicle carrying eight or more individuals, you will need to pass a DOT physical. Operators of vehicles with gross combination weight ratings over 10,000 pounds and operators who transport hazardous substances will require a DOT placard.
How well do you need to see and hear to pass a DOT physical exam?
Each eye must have at least 20/40 vision, with or without corrective lenses. You should be able to distinguish traffic signal colors as well. Prospective CDL drivers must also be able to hear strong whispers from no less than five feet away.
I have high blood pressure and diabetes. Can I still become a CDL driver?
Yes, as long as your blood pressure is below 159/99. You are allowed to take medication to control blood pressure. You can also have diabetes but your diabetes must not require insulin injections. CDL drivers may take oral diabetes medication only.
What is checked during DOT physicals?
Your chiropractor in Austin will check your blood pressure, heart rate, vision, ears, throat, lungs and spine for abnormalities. A neurological test is included in your DOT physical to ensure reflexes are functioning at optimal level.
What would prevent me from getting a CDL/DOT license?
Certain health conditions could disqualify you from passing a DOT physical exam, such as epilepsy, drug/alcohol abuse, implanted heart defibrillator or any other medical issue that might interfere with your ability to drive safely and responsibly.
Is there anything I need to do before receiving my DOT physical?
Your Austin chiropractor recommends that you do not drink coffee or smoke before the exam to avoid increasing blood pressure and heart rate. Make sure you get eight hours of restful sleep to help reduce levels of stress hormones in your body. Wear clothes and shoes easily removable to facilitate testing of your lungs, heart, abdomen, spine and reflexes.
How long is my DOT license valid?
If you pass the test with no issues, DOT licenses are typically valid for two years. However, if you take medication for diabetes, blood pressure or other chronic condition you may be given a one-year DOT card. This means you will need a DOT physical exam every 12 months. Three month DOT licenses are also available for people who need extra time to get a medical problem under control.
