It’s that time of year again! We’re talking about back to school time. There’s a laundry list of preparations parents have to make ahead of September, such as buying books, backpacks, pencils and pens, and countless other school supplies.

This is also the perfect time to sign your child or teen up for UT Austin sports physicals. Here’s what you need to know about these Austin TX physicals.

Why Get UT Austin Sports Physicals?

There are plenty of reasons your child should get a physical before the school year officially starts. These include:

  • It may be mandatory for your child to get a sports physical before starting a season of an extracurricular sport, such as football, baseball, or basketball
  • It may be mandatory for your child to get a sports physical for gym class
  • These physicals can diagnose any injuries a child may have, including past injuries and whether these healed properly

What to Expect During a Sports Physical

You’ve gone ahead and schedule sports physical for your child or teen. What should they expect?

First, the appointment will start with a review of their medical history. The medical professional will discuss the child’s history of medication use, past injuries and illnesses, allergies, and past surgeries.

Then the doctor will move on to the physical itself, testing for:

  • Joint flexibility and strength
  • Posture
  • Throat, nose, ear, stomach, lung, and heart health
  • Vision
  • Pulse and blood pressure
  • Weight
  • Height

If the doctor finds any health issues, they will inform the child and their parents right away. This doesn’t necessarily mean the child can’t play any sports for that year, but rather they have to take certain precautions to be safe and healthy when they engage in physical activities.

For instance, a child may need sports-friendly glasses, an inhaler for asthma, or certain gear to protect their elbows and knees. Your doctor will make sure your child is in the best possible health for a whole school year of sports fun.
